A Lifetime Spent Observing the Light

For over 40 years, I have explored the rugged beauty of the Irish landscape. From the granite peaks of the Mournes to the hidden details of a woodland path. My work is not just about what I see, but about the magic that happens when the light is exactly right.

From the Belfast College of Art to the Slopes of Slieve Donard

My journey began at the Belfast College of Art, where I graduated in 1979. Since then, my practice has been a continuous dialogue with the elements. As a member of the Ulster Watercolour Society, I have spent decades mastering the nuances of watercolour and acrylics, but the landscape of County Down remains my primary teacher.

For me, painting is about that fleeting moment when the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Whether it’s a sudden break in the Mourne clouds or the detail of a wildflower often overlooked, I strive to make the mundane sparkle. Working primarily in watercolour and acrylics, my process is a constant manipulation of light to reveal the hidden drama in the landscape.

I am intrigued by the mundane and the often overlooked—the way a particular shadow falls across a stone wall or how a field of bluebells can sparkle and come alive under a shifting sky. My goal is to create a sense of mood and mystery, inviting the viewer to step into a moment of stillness.

Today, I work from my studio at the ASH Gallery in Newcastle. It is here that I translate my sketches and observations into finished canvases, always chasing that 'extraordinary' quality that only the perfect light can provide.
